Deeply honored to share that my latest digital release, “Searching”, has been awarded the 2026 Asian Flute Award by the World Flute Society.
I am humbled that this recording has been recognized among so many outstanding artists dedicated to the world’s flute traditions. In the traditional shakuhachi honkyoku repertoire, pieces titled Chōshi or Shirabe carry the meaning of “searching”—a quiet opening of the path. Far more than warm-ups, these preludes invite the player to settle into the breath, connect with the instrument, and prepare for the journey ahead. Searching is an exploration of these beautiful, often-overlooked introductions. Each piece reveals its own unique voice and invites both performer and listener to enter into a quiet journey of discovery. My heartfelt gratitude to the World Flute Society for this recognition, and to my teachers, students, family, friends, and listeners for supporting my music over the years. Steven Kōchiku Casano is a Dai Shihan (Grandmaster) of shakuhachi with over 30 years devoted to this ancient Japanese bamboo flute. His performances—whether in sacred ceremonies, workshops, or concerts—invite stillness, reflection, and healing. Featured internationally and on Hawai‘i Public Radio’s Evening Concert, Steven’s music offers a deep connection to the spiritual and cultural roots of Japan.
